friday feast: mr. cornelius eats mark strand’s poem

“I think what poetry finally does is to help us experience our world as intensely as possible.” (Mark Strand)

Have I mentioned just how much I love this year’s National Poetry Month poster?

Featuring the first stanza of Mark Strand’s “Eating Poetry” cleverly drawn by New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast, it’s the poster to top all posters. Period.

As we gear up for the official start of Poetry Month next week, we simply must don our finest bibs, polish our knives and forks, and wholeheartedly nosh on Strand’s delectable words. As he once said, “The reader has to sort of give himself over to the poem and allow the poem to inhabit him.” Ladies and Gentlemen, lick your chops!

EATING POETRY
by Mark Strand

Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine.
I have been eating poetry.

The librarian does not believe what she sees.
Her eyes are sad
and she walks with her hands in her dress.

The poems are gone.
The light is dim.
The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up.

Their eyeballs roll,
their blond legs burn like brush.
The poor librarian begins to stamp her feet and weep.

She does not understand.
When I get on my knees and lick her hand,
she screams.

I am a new man.
I snarl at her and bark.
I romp with joy in the bookish dark.

~ from Selected Poems (Alfred A. Knopf/Random House, 1980)

Clean, precise, surreal. Vintage Strand. A good poem produces a visceral reaction in the reader. As we internalize it, it may momentarily dally with our intellect, but ultimately it taps into our emotional core and arouses our instinctual essence, raw and animalistic. A good poem is a transformative experience.

the eggstraordinary egg cup adventure

my egg cups

Spring is practically here. You know what that means.

Eggs eggs eggs. 🙂

Boil ’em, dye ’em, decorate ’em, hide ’em.

Don’t know eggsactly why, but lately I’ve become a tad obsessed with cupping them. After all, they deserve due props and pedestals for being so dang versatile. We have several egg cups in the Alphabet Soup kitchen, but I thought it would be fun to acquire a few more.

Hah! When I looked around, the yolk was on me. Those egg cups runneth over! Now I can’t even make up my mind.

Here’s a mix of my faves: retro, vintage, sassy, modern, whimsical, interesting, funky, just plain cool. Most of these are for sale, so click away for more info. Not that I’m trying to egg you on or anything. 🙂

here comes the soup! here comes the soup!

It’s all Andy Warhol’s fault that I’m hooked on soupy pop art stuff. The iconic Campbell’s soup cans continue to appear on jewelry, accessories, even fishing lures, and they just keep calling my name. (Click on each image for more info at Etsy.)

hangin’ with mr. tea, or, a warm tale for a cold winter’s day

Mr. Cornelius and I have a new friend in the Alphabet Soup kitchen. His name is Mr. Tea, and so far, he’s taught us that:

  1. It’s socially acceptable to take your pants off in public.
  2. It’s also socially acceptable to wet your pants.
  3. Another name for tea infuser is “Hot Pants.”

Come along on Mr. Tea’s first adventure. So many cups, so little time!

Mr. Tea arrived in a Christmas stocking and immediately stole our hearts.

Aren’t they fun? A great novelty gift that blends the old with the new. If you don’t see a book that you like at her shop, she will try to find the perfect book. Or, if you already have a book that you would like converted into a purse or cover, place a custom order.

In case you’re worried about the book pages, Michelle donates them fully intact to a local refugee center. You also have the option of having her re-bind them in matching fabric. Nice gift set idea for your special bookish friends. ☺
